The first six containers have been delivered to Sremska Mitrovica, thus marking the commencement of implementation of the joint project of ports Leget and Rijeka - Panonska Vrata (gateway to the Pannonian plain), Project Director Marko Simic told Tanjug.

The project envisages the delivery of containers with goods by rail from the Rijeka's port of Jadranska Vrata (Adriatic Gate) to Sremska Mitrovica - Panonska Vrata, followed by the distribution of goods to users of the port and vice versa. What is also planned is that about 10,000 containers with goods be transported in both directions by the year's end.

Cranes delivered from Rijeka have already been installed at the terminal in Sremska Mitrovica and they can also be included in multimodal transport, that is, a combined transportation of goods by ship, train and trucks.

Goods in the port of Leget are stored in public and customs warehouses. The Sremska Mitrovica Customs Office is located within the port complex, which should make the job of exporters easier and lower the costs of transport.

So far, about EUR 5 million have been invested in Panonska Vrata, which is only the first phase of the investment that should lead to direct employment of about 50 people and creation of another 300 jobs at freight-forwarding companies.
