Aircraft of Montenegro Airlines Banned from Landing at Belgrade Airport, Montenegrin Airline Carrier Says That Serbia Remains Part of Transportation Plans

The aircraft of Montenegro Airlines will not be allowed to land at the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, as the Civil Aviation Directorate confirmed for Tanjug.

The government in Podgorica announced on Monday that it had decided to open its borders to a number of countries from June 1, but they were to remain closed for Serbia and Republika Srpska.

Yesterday, Montenegro Airlines announced that it continued preparing for the resumption of commercial flights, and that the first flights would be to Belgrade.

The Civil Aviation Directorate, however, has decided not to give permits to the Montenegrin airline carrier, and the explanation of the decision, as reported by the Blic daily, the first to unofficially report on the ban, says that the decision of the government in Podgorica violates the principle of reciprocity of movement of travelers between the two states.

As said, this has a direct impact on the reciprocity in carrying out regular air transport defined in Article 13 Paragraph 1 of the Rulebook on Issuing Permits to Foreign Airline Carriers for International Air Transport with the Republic of Serbia, to the detriment of airline carriers registered in Serbia.

Montenegro Airlines has announced that Serbia certainly remains a part of their transport plans.

– Regardless of this unexpected decision from Belgrade, Serbia certainly remains a part of Montenegro Airlines' transport plans and we will try to contribute to mitigating the economic consequences of the COVID-19 epidemic as soon as possible – says the press release by the Montenegrin company, reported by the CDM portal on the evening of May 26.

MA says that ahead of them is the struggle to connect Montenegro by air with European destinations quickly and as well as possible and that “this industry should not depend on political decisions.”
