As part of their fight against climate change, the European Commission will, for the first time, implement limits for C02 emission by trucks, Reuters reported on Friday, July 15, citing the draft of the EU’s climate package, which had come into its possession, writes indikator.ba.

Before, EU used to prescribe threshold values of C02 for passenger vehicles and light trucks only. Beginning with 2021, the manufacturers will only be allowed to make trucks which emit no more than 95 grams of C02 per kilometer.

European manufacturers, including VW, Daimler and Renault, are resisting such measures.

Trucks are responsible for around a fourth of the C02 emission coming from road traffic. The EU will define the mid-term goals primarily in the sectors of transport and agriculture. The transport sector has practically not reduced its C02 emission in the past few years. On the other hand, the situation in the sectors of energy and industry is better due to emission trading.

The EU draft proposes the precise definition of the amount of C02 emission and fuel consumption through a new method and the subsequent setting of the limits. In addition to that, goals for the period up till 2013 will be defined regarding the new efficiency values for car and van engines. The EU intends to reduce the emission of C02 by 40% relative to 1990 by the year 2030.

The proposals will be presented on Wednesday, July 20, after the conference on climate in Paris.
