Italy's Amest should start the exploitation of biogas from the Nis-based landfill Bubanj, Nis Mayor Zoran Perisic announced.

At the moment, only the last, fourth cell of the landfill is in operation. The previous three are closed for being overcrowded with trash. Without specifying when the works would start, the mayor said that biogas from the second and the third cell would be used.

- The General Regulation Plan is now being amended to allow for Amest to get a land spanning 200 square meters to build a power plant on it and start exploitation - said Mayor Perisic.

Amest signed an agreement with the city in June 2011, while everything was confirmed in late April 2012. By signing that agreement, Nis became one of the first cities in Serbia implementing the Kyoto Protocol.

Ongoing construction of a recycling center in the fourth cell is financed with the money from the city budget, while the revised budget includes funds earmarked for designing a strategy for the construction of the new landfill Keles.

Experts often call the existing landfill Bubanj an "environmental bomb" because it is overcrowded with trash. The problem of accumulated methane, the main cause of a potential explosion, will be solved with the construction of a biogas power plant. The funding for the construction of this plant is provided by the European Union and the United Nations.
