Montenegro is entering a strategic partnership with the French company EDF Energy, announced the prime minister, Milojko Spajic. The minister of energy and mining, Sasa Mujovic, said that the aim was for a larger source of electrical energy to be built after a longer time period, and Montenegro has initiated two projects – the hydro power plants Krusevo and on the river Cehotina.

As Spajic said at the press conference held on the occasion of this partnership, this is one of the most famous electrical energy companies, a leader in Europe, and the cooperation is the result of the talks with the French president, Emmanuel Macron.

The company has an income of EUR 170 billion and employs 200,000 people. He also pointed out that the French had great experience in using water energy potentials.

– EDF Energy is a giant in its field and it is the most competent company to help us with the projects to follow. They will help us build capacities which are sufficient not just for Montenegro, but the entire region.

At the conference, Mujovic said that the government was starting to realize concrete energy projects. He pointed out that Montenegro had remarkable wind and solar potential, but that it still needed to build a larger energy facility.

– After a long pause, it is time to build a new, serious source of electrical energy. We have applied two projects, the hydro power plants Krusevo and on the river Cehotina – said Vujovic.

When it comes to the river Komarnica, minister Mujovic said that the government wanted to be responsible toward the institutions and the considerable number of people who had expressed doubts about that project.

– We should all be producers and consumers of electrical energy and this partner will enable us that – he added.

Spajic said that, if it was determined that there was no environmentally sustainable solution for the Komarnica, it would not be built.

Mujovic pointed out that EDF Energy was also a leader in the field of nuclear energy and that there had been talk with French partners about whether such projects were feasible in Montenegro.
