Enthusiasts from Torda, a village in the Banat municipality of Zitiste, are not giving up on the intention to have the exploitation of the medicinal “bitter water” and the thermal water site renewed.

The so-called “bitter water” from Torda achieved wide popularity in the period between the two world wars. It used to be bottled as Jordan, and another well was later excavated. The water had the same composition and was bottled as Sveti Djordje this time. In the years following WW2, the water was bottled by Banja Rusanda and a facility was built over the spring site.

When Rusanda stopped using the well, an investor from Novi Sad restarted the sale of Sveti Djordje in 1995, but gave up in 2001. Since then, the water has not been exploited.

– The “bitter water” in Torda was discovered by accident in 1923, and analyses showed that it had medicinal properties, leading to its exploitation and bottling. Unfortunately, this water, that was once popular, is now completely unused, and we are unsuccessfully trying to find an investor for the utilization of this resource – says the president of the council of the Torda community, Janos Dobai, who has been knocking on many doors attempting to revive the exploitation of the Torda water for years.

The water has gone through serious analyses and has been rated well. Engineer Jaroslav Tomic claims that it is very basal, with a pH value of 8, that it contains large quantities of Glauber's salt, as well as selenium. Its properties help with digestion and with liver and kidney functions. Thanks to selenium's anti-oxidant properties, it reduces risk of cancer.

– It's a shame for water with such properties not to be widely used. Even with all our enthusiasm, we haven't managed to convince any investor to renew the exploitation, and we've also lobbied with renowned spa centers in Hungary. It's probably a matter of competition as well – Dobai says.

In addition to medicinal water, Torda also allows for the exploitation of thermal waters, with a temperature of 73 degrees.

– These are all good conditions for the opening of a spa in this area, but for now, no one wants to start realizing the idea – Dobai complains, but notes that he will not give up on attempts to draw investors to Torda and revive the village through spa tourism.
