Capital as modern metropolis - Belgrade's Development Strategy adopted

Aldermen of the Belgrade Assembly adopted on Monday the City Development Strategy, which will provide guidelines for economic and social development of the capital city, construction of infrastructure and strengthening of the city institutions in the future. Implementation of the Strategy is not time-limited and it will also represent a source of activities for the next city authorities, which will retain the right to determine priorities in accordance with the circumstances, said city architect Dejan Vasovic.

- One of the main preconditions for the development of Belgrade is its economic competitiveness, which is why it is necessary to develop the service industry - said Vasovic, explaining the Development Strategy to the aldermen.

He stressed that an important part of the strategy was social development, based on the improvement of both preschool education and the social position of citizens.

The third part of the City Development Strategy deals with the improvement of degraded environment, while the fourth part, dedicated to the urban identity of the capital, focuses on the reconstruction of facades, construction of city attractions and insisting on them, said Vasovic.

Part of the strategy dedicated to the urban development envisages, among the rest, rehabilitation of the Old Fairgrounds, Sugar Plant, Old Mill, and the building of BIGZ, while the part focusing on traffic development lists the aims such as more efficient use of the city railways, introduction of river passenger transport, activation of the Batajnica airport for low-cost airlines, as well as a system regulation of parking.

The long-term development strategy also envisages development of the gas network and renewable energy sources, as well as construction of a waste water treatment system and introduction of new telecommunication services.

The seventh, last part of the Strategy, deals with the institutional development, that is, perfection of the electronic administration system, which should enable citizens to download forms from the Internet and communicate with the administration easier.
