And it was said that Tesla can not heat Belgrade...

The Obrenovac bridge was initially built for the needs of a hot water pipeline that was supposed to bring hot water from steam power plant Nikola Tesla to radiators in New Belgrade, so this energy could be used in the most optimal way. Since about 85% of heating plants in Belgrade use gas as heating fuel, it is expected that, in spite of the last abandonment of the project, which happened few years ago, the story of the Belgrade-Obrenovac hot water pipeline will be revived.

- Hot water pipeline Nikola Tesla was one of the best ecological ideas of Belgrade, which would pay off in about 6 years despite the fact that the investment is worth over USD 150m. The ecological aspect of that investment is immeasurable, while the obtained heat would reduce the needs for other fuels - crude oil or gas - Miodrag Ferencek, a famous city planner from Belgrade, explains for eKapija.

Ferencek reminds that Belgrade has put a significant effort in creating central heating system, which was extremely justified at the time when heating fuel was crude oil because there were many local heating plants, the sources of pollution that had to be put under control and joined into big units.

- That was one of the largest city planning and economic projects in the capital city. However, the system is now old because crude oil is not used as fuel any more, but gas. To connect the centralized heating system with the construction of this hot water pipeline, which would be used as a source of additional energy for the centralized heating system, would be a project for Belgrade to be proud of. That hot water pipeline would be in operation during the whole year.

Construction of the hot water pipeline did not go very far, that is, it did not even leave the grounds of steam power plant Nikola Tesla because it did not cross the bridge that was built for that purpose, and - it did not enter the field near Surcin because the project was abandoned. Canals for this hot water pipeline were first dug alongside New Belgrade's blocks and then, at the time when Nenad Bogdanovic was Mayor, they were buried. It was announced on that occasion that burying of the canals meant definite abandonment of the project.

Now, it is not written in the city capital acts that the project is definitely buried. The time will show its definite destiny.
