Construction of bridge between Obrenovac and Surcin on hold for over a decade

According to the promises that the city and republic authorities made in 2008, one-hour travel from Obrenovac to Surcin should have already been shortened to only few minutes. However, exceptionally important link in the network of new city main routes, the road bridge, a part of "Srem's Gazela", has not been finished yet, so that one still needs to take the roundabout way to cross the Sava river. Namely, the Protocol on revival of works on "forgotten bridge" whose construction commenced in 1994 was signed in September 2008, but building company Mostogradnja has been trying to unblock its accounts ever since in order to be able to provide necessary financial guarantees.

On the occasion of signing of the Protocol, Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas said that the bridge would be finished by the end of 2009, while total budget for continuation of construction was projected at over 1.5 billion dinars. According to the announcements at the time, the Ministry for National Investment Plan promised 300 million dinars, while 150 million dinars was promised by the Directorate for Building Land and Development of Belgrade.

According to the adopted solutions, the bridge between Obrenovac and Surcin is 1,003 meters long and almost 7 meters wide. It will comprise two road lanes and two pedestrian walks, while total length of the bridge and access roads should be about 30 kilometers. Thanks to “Srem's Gazela”, drivers would be able to reach Belgrade-Zagreb highway from Obrenovac in less than half an hour by taking the bridge across the Sava and driving through the territory of the borough Surcin. Than they would be able to take the bypass around Belgrade. The new city junction - “Surcin's main route”, would go from New Belgrade's blocks to the Ibarska main route. Also, we should not forget a positive influence on environment since the freight traffic would be relocated from the current roads through Obrenovac, Baric and Umka, to the new road to Srem. With the opening of the bridge, Obedska Bara would be additionally activated as a significant tourist destination.

Since about 80% of the bridge structure have already been built, the project for continuation of construction envisages reinforcing of the pillar positions, funding of the bridge, sand blasting and anti-corrosive protection of steel structures, work on lane plate and several other works. The bridge has a steel structure with concrete carriers, and it currently has one lane on each side and pavement on both sides. The most important jos is construction of access junctions (two branches on the side of Surcin and one on the side of Obrenovac), without which the Obrenovac bridge can not function. In addition to the branch towards Boljevci, a road link 20 kilometers long is planned to be built on the side of Surcin and it should connect the bridge with the Dobanovci cloverleaf interchange, while the access road on the side of Obrenovac is significantly shorter.

Let us remind that the initial project envisaged that the bridge be used only as the carrier of hot water pipes. The decision that the structure be reinforced and broadened for road traffic was made in 1996 when plans for the bridge in the vicinity of the power plant in Obrenovac were changed. For the needs of the Army, the bridge was widened to enable tanks to cross it. The bridge was built of once famous Belgrade's tax of 3%, which was collected during the mandate of Nebojsa Covic, and it was completed neglected afterward because there is no access road for cars on either side of the bridge. Over ten years ago, construction of suburban hot water pipeline was discontinued as well….
