Cumicevo Sokace will officially become an art district next year. It has been striving towards this goal for the past decade thanks to the enthusiasm of local designers, who have managed to revive the location of the dilapidated first shopping mall of the Serbian capital, Politika writes.

This means that numerous renters and owners of outlets at the shop center built in 1989 no longer have to fear that the facility, raised with a temporary building permit, will be torn down because the plan envisages a garage in this location, according to Deputy Mayor of Belgrade Goran Vesic.

In order for the center to remain in the current location, the city will change the detailed regulation plan, open an architectural contest for the development of Cumicevo Sokace and enable the owners, one of which is the city itself, to legalize and register the outlets.

– A part of the funds will be provided by the city, whereas another part will be provided by the renters. Last week, we met with people who work there and there will be another meeting in around ten days, where we will see what the next steps will be. The idea is for this to be an authentic art district, which will be important for Belgrade's image – Vesic says.
