Ana Manic, Sauter Building Control Serbia: Blockchain Solutions for Cyber Security of Smart Buildings

We talked to Ana Manic, in charge of sales and marketing at Sauter Building Control Serbia, about the consequences of a cyber attack, but also the ways of preventing it. Special focus is placed on the company`s latest solution, Modulo 6, and we also talked about the data center in Kragujevac.

Sauter has long since been recognized as someone who always brings innovations to the field of building automation. Do Sauter solutions enable the protection of the data used in the building management process and in what way?

Around 40% of the buildings in the world have registered a cyber attack so far, and in Europe the percentage is even higher (Source: CPO Magazine, Oct 2019, New Kaspersky Report).

One of the most common examples of an attack is an attack on the BMS system (central system of building supervision and management) and the changing of the parameters that influence the safety and the environmental conditions in the facility itself. The recent example of the attack on a hospital in Germany, where the environmental conditions were changed in the facility very quickly, regarding temperature and humidity, which are maintained automatically, nearly collapsed the hospital`s operations, which jeopardized all the patients who were being treated and rehabilitated at the time. The reasons for such attacks can vary, from individuals who do it without a rational explanation, to organization that require money to stop one such attack.

Sauter produces and implements smart solutions which manage nearly all the important systems in buildings, and such systems are often the target of such attacks.

Our latest solution, Modulo 6, developed at our development center in Basel and based on the blockchain technology, brings digitalization to this field and provides the user with security regarding the protection of the data used in facility management.

We like to emphasize that we are one of the first companies in the world with a cyber security certificate for our products and software in this field.

This means that our system, which is based on cloud and IoT technologies, has the ability to recognize a cyber attack and react by automatically isolating the part of the system that has been attacked and excluding it from the chain, which is followed by the “treatment” process, and the software that was present in the automatic station before the attack is automatically launched again, through a cloud. When this process is finished, that part of the system is returned to the system, which continues operating without a problem.

All this happens automatically and without the user of the system being aware, so the presence of human supervision is not necessary. Of course, the system marks where the cyber attack happened, which the user can later see on the server of the Sauter central smart building system.



You have mentioned digitalization. How important is it in your operations and what benefits does it bring for the end-user?

On a sample of large projects that have implemented our latest solutions in the past two years, Sauter has shown that investments in digital transformation pay off very quickly. All these results indicate that smart solutions are inevitable and that digitalization is very profitable.

In addition to allowing people to make savings and having a cyber security certificate, our solution Modulo 6 certainly guarantees the best conditions of staying in the facility itself, from the aspect of comfort.

We know that you are currently preparing smart solutions for the new data center in Kragujevac, which should start working soon. Could we learn something more about that project?

Data centers are demanding and complex projects from the aspects of system management and security. We are fully dedicated to the project we are realizing in Kragujevac, where we are implementing the Modulo 6 solution, which entails redundant operations of automatic stations and which provides maximum reliability that the facilities with this purpose demand.
