Construction of Fruska Gora Corridor Begins – Completion of Fast Route from Novi Sad to Ruma Announced for March 2024

The construction of the Fruska Gora Corridor, the fast route from Novi Sad to Ruma, 47.7 kilometers long, has begun, and the works are planned to be completed in three years.

The route will have four lanes of 3.5 meters each, without emergency lanes, and connect the highways to Sid and Subotica. The works are being carried out by the Chinese company CRBC, with which the government signed the agreement in October 2020. The president of Serbia announced the completion of the works for March 2024.

– Under the agreement, the Fruska Gora Corridor should be completed in May 2025 – Vucic said and added that the company’s director had promised that it would be completed by March 2024. He added that the agreement entailed the planting of two new trees to each one cut down due to the works.

The route will stretch from the Kac Interchange on the Novi Sad-Zrenjanin road and cross the E-75 highway at the Minut gas station. The corridor with the new route will further go toward the Danube, then through Fruska Gora to the Belgrade-Zagreb highway. The fast route will cross into Srem through the new bridge, which is supposed to be built near the church at Tekije and then further go to Bukovac through the tunnel beneath Fruska Gora. The tunnel will go toward the interchange to Vrdnik and then further to Ruma.

As announced earlier, the construction of the Novi Sad-Ruma highway will be divided into four phases. The first is Ruma-entrance to the tunnel through Fruska Gora, the second is the construction of the 17-km tunnel, the third is the construction of the exit from the tunnel to the interchange at Miseluk, and the fourth is the bypass route around Petrovaradin.

The Fruska Gora Corridor will connect Corridor 4 and Corridor 10 and create the shortest connection between Bosnia and Romania. The biggest importance of the Novi Sad-Ruma Corridor with a tunnel is that it will finally solve the huge problem of the passing of freight vehicles through Fruska Gora and Irig, where one of the busiest routes in Serbia passes, with 10,000 to 12,000 vehicles a day on average.

Let us remind that, in mid-September 2020, the government adopted the commercial contract on the construction of the Fruska Gora Corridor with the Chinese company CRBC, worth EUR 606 million.

In mid-August 2020, the government obtained the approval from the Chinese Exim Bank, that is, the Chinese ministry, for the financing of the Fruska Gora Corridor.
