No legal fees for consumer disputes under RSD 500,000 – Consumer Protection Law adopted

National Assembly of Serbia adopted on Friday (13 June 2014)Consumer Protection Law, as well as Draft amendments to the Law on ElectronicCommunications and Law on Postal Services.

In order to improve a consumer protection system andcooperation between consumer protection agents and other entities dealing withthe same issue, the Law prescribes that government should form National Councilfor Consumer Protection, and the relevant Ministry should maintain NationalRegister of Consumer Complaints.

In consumer dispute court proceedings legal fees will bescrapped for claims worth up to RSD 500,000.

The Law prescribes that the disputes could be resolvedthrough extra-judicial settlement.

Consumer has right to terminate a distance contract, signedout of business offices, within 14 days, without specifying reasons andadditional costs.

Market inspection will be able to imposefines on offenders.
