May 10, 2005 - Round table was held in Sarajevo on "Tunnels on highway on corridor 5C". Construction of one meter of tunnel is estimated to about 40,000 KM. About 40 tunnels are to be built on corridor 5C (more than 40 kilometers), so that the authorities are trying to find a way to built these facilities in accordance with European standards with the money BiH has.
Emir Mašnić, deputy of director of IPSA institute, said that the balance was searched between the construction of shorter and mid-length tunnels.
- If we decide for shorter tunnels, we will set aside much less money for increased embankments. Much land will be covered in order to get steep ascent. On the other hand, mid-length tunnels have smaller embankments, but that length demands special protection conditions - said Mašnić.
It was said at the meeting that the present plan included construction of tunnel near Doboj, about 5.5 km long. But, it has to be estimated if that length is optimal or the construction of highway on that territory will be realized in some other way.
Construction of tunnel in the vicinity of Maglaj, about 3 km long, is in the pipeline, as well as construction of the tunnel near Nemila, three kilometers long, and two more near Žepča, about 2 km long. It is also possible that the tunnel 3 km long will be built next to Lašvanska cloverleaf.
About ten tunnels of average length of 2 km will most probably be built on the section from Konjic to Mostar, but it is also possible that smaller number of longer tunnels will be built instead.
The tunnels on corridor 5C will have to be built in accordance with European standards.
According to these standards, the tunnels that are longer than 3 meters must have lighting, signal network, signalization and teletracking, i.e. system of cameras that follow every event inside the tunnels.
There must be control center in front of the tunnel with constant crew and extremely expensive equipment.
