The eKapija web portal has launched a competition for 2014 Aurea awards that will be presented to best investments in 2013. While waiting to see who the new winners will be, we have paid a visit to the companies whose projects were shortlisted for last year's awards to check how far they have gone with the development of their respective businesses.

By opening a new recycling plant, the Jugo-impex E.E.R company doubled the amount of electronic waste recycled in 2013 when compared to 2012. This plant operated at full capacity during the previous year. Jugo-impex E.E.R from Nis is the first and only company from this region to export Freon gas which has permanent negative effects on the ozone layer and causes the greenhouse effect.

- For the first time in Serbia's history, Freon gas is being exported from the country and treated in an environmentally acceptable and safe manner. A total of 15.5 tonnes of CFC from over 100,000 recycled cooling appliances was shipped to Germany last year – Jugo-impex EER General Manager Ninoslav Milenkovic says to eKapija.

As people at this company remind, Freon gas from only one refrigerator produces the same damaging effects as exhaust gases released by a single car over a period of one year.

The next export of Freon gas is scheduled for mid-2014, after the permitting process for the export of hazardous waste is completed.

Jugo-impex EER's recycling plant, opened in September 2012, is based on an innovative German technology ensuring safe extraction of dangerous goods from cooling appliances. It makes it possible to separate CFC (Freon gas) from polyurethane foam and filtrate the latter completely to get a fuel of high calorific value, while CFC extracted using a technological process and stored in designated containers ends up in licensed facilities for the destruction of CFCs in Germany instead of being released into the atmosphere. In 2013, the company recycled 10,000 tonnes of hazardous electronic and electrical waste.

Aside from increasing the volume of recycling, the new plant also guarantess an improved quality of recyclates. Electronic waste is used to produce secondary raw materials with as much as 98 percent purity, which led to a substantial growth of sales, both in the country and abroad.

- During 2013, we sold a total of 6,420 tonnes of various recyclates - mainly recycled iron, plastic, aluminum and copper. Some of it was sold in the local market, but we also export recyclates to China and Germany - says Ninkovic.

According to our interlocutor, the company's plan for this year is to increase the volume of recycling and sales by 20 percent.

Apart from the Best Social Utility Award that Jugo-impex received from our web portal last year, the company and its director Vujadin Scekic also won the Best Company and Manager of the Year Award which is presented by the Europe Business Assembly and the International Socrates Committee in Great Britain. This award is accompanied by the Trademark license that is valid for five years and should make it even more easier for Jugo-Impex to market its goods in Europe.
