In 2013, Serbia was again facing problems with the lack of some drugs while the waiting lists in health institutions did not decrease, not even slightly. According to the European Health Consumer Index (EHCI) which measures health care quality based on 50 indicators in 35 European countries, Serbia ranks last the second year in a row. There were only minor changes in the Serbian health sector during the previous year.

One medical story particularly moved Serbia during 2013.The tragic destiny of little Tijana Ognjanovic who died in Houston before her heart transplantation united the citizens of Serbia who collected almost EUR 2 mil to support Tijana. However, as things in Serbia usually are, there was a fuss about where the unused funds will go until the Ognjanovic family did not came up with the decision that the funds will be donated to the Institute for a mother and a child. Although Tijana’s story ended sadly, it showed us that many children like Tijana is waiting for our help while the state adopted a regulation which implies that Republic Bureau for health insurance will cover the costs for all children who should be sent for heart and lungs transplantation abroad.

This year started with a proposal of the Minister of economy Sasa Radulovic stating that all citizens of Serbia should be entitled to health insurance. The plan of the Ministry is to facilitate employers when it comes to health contribution payment and health insurance cards.

Investment stories whose implementation would create better environment in the health care system in Serbia attracted the greatest attention of eKapija readers. Quite expectedly, the first ranked is the set up of a new health giant and the opening of the privately-owned hospital MediGroup in the location of Belgrade-based KBC. MediGroup offers its patients a top expert team from over 20 specialized branches, the most modern screening diagnostics, 7 operating roomss and more than 60 hospital beds, a maternity hospital, transport of patients, daily hospital and a laboratory.

The story about the private hospital is followed by the second ranked reconstruction of the first out of 4 clinical centers in Serbia. The biggest investment in Nis in the past decades is valued at EUR 31.5 mil. The future Clinical Center Nis will cover a surface area of 48,000 square meters, 26,000 square meters of which will be newly built facilities. Deadline for the completion of works is the end of 2016.

In May 2013, a contract on the construction of stem cell center at the Faculty of Medicine in Kragujevac was signed once again. The city of Kragujevac donated land, the European Investment Bank approved the project and students, professors and doctoral students are waiting fully prepared. The eKapija readers’ interest is not surprising then. Therefore, this project whose implementation is due to start in early 2014 ranks third on our list.

Construction of the new sports medicine center could be implemented as a mutual project of the republic bureau and the world clinic for orthopedics and sports medicine, Quatar-based Aspetar. However, for any kind of a serious step it is necessary to wait for the adoption of the Master Plan for Kosutnjak.

Another project that awaits investor made it to this list. The general hospital Stefan Visoki presented preliminary designs for a new hotel-stationary that would represent a functional unit - Palanacki Kiseljak Tourist and Rehabilitation Center. According to the project, the complex would occupy 100 ares. The existing facility of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Ward should be completely reconstructed and the new hotel-stationary of B category with 70beds will be built near the specialized hospital building and should occupy 2,250 square meters.
