Last week the US Agency for International Development (USAID) presented a new form of funding in Serbia - direct funding, and allocated grants to five organizations on that occasion, thus completely putting project management in their hands.
According to US Ambassador to Serbia Michael Kirby and USAID Director Susan Fritz, the aim of the transition to direct funding is to strengthen the capacity of organizations in Serbia and allow for more efficient use of USAID's funds, and it represents a sign of trust in civil society organizations and government institutions.
- Direct funding is a sign of stronger ties between Serbia and the USA, as well as of the improved capacity of organizations in Serbia. The latter will very important for Serbia on its path to the European Union - said Kirby.
Susan Fritz reiterated that the USAID had contributed over USD 700 million to Serbia since 2001.
The following five organizations received a total of over USD 1 million in direct funding: Gradjanske inicijative, Dostignuca mladih Srbije, Medijska koalicija, Sandzak Regional Development Agency, and the Trag foundation.
