Geologists claims that nearly 50 million tons of petroleum lie in the northern part of Republic of Srpska. Petroleum in Posavina could be exploited for about 20 years and it would make income of about 300 million USD on annual basis. According to calculations of Oil Refinery in Bosanski Brod, nearly 1 million tons of petroleum could be pumped out annually from the territory of Posavina, which would make profit of over €200m.

Researches that started before the war have not been completely finished yet and their completion would cost, according to estimates of Ministry of Economy, Energy and Development of Republic of Srpska, 37 million USD. Aware of the fact that there is no money for continuation of the researches, Refinery, allegedly, sent the request, back in 2003, for allotment of concession. Commission for concession of Republic of Srpska claims that such request never reached them. Government of Srpska and Refinery Brod are still optimists expecting happy end of the story about concession until Fall 2005.

Potential deposit of petroleum is located on the territories of both entities, but the bigger part belongs to Republic of Srpska. Petroleum could be, as geologists claim, in the valley of the Tinja river, as well as near Sanski Most in Federation of BiH and near Trebinje in Srpska. Alkali waters with pH value that points to existence of oil deposits were also found in the vicinity of Novi Grad. Petroleum potential of Bosnia and Herzegovina is at the level of the deposits in neighboring Croatia (in Slavonija) and Serbia (in Vojvodina) and is not any different from European average. British Petroleum is allegedly interested in petroleum from BiH. Part of British Petroleum is company Amoko that was seriously engaged in the issues of petroleum deposit researches on this territory before the war. (Pregled)
