Canada's support to improvement of livestock breeding in Serbia
Minister of Agriculture, Trade, Forestry and Water Management Dusan Petrovic and Canadian Ambassador to Serbia Roman Vashchuk signed Wednesday a Memorandum of Understanding to enable the cooperation between the two states in agriculture, it was announced on the Serbian government's website.
The MoU should make it possible for these two countries to improve their cooperation in livestock breeding, genetic resources in cattle breeding, exchange of information and technological and trade exchange.
Following the signing, Petrovic said that cattle breeding accounted for 30% of agricultural production in Serbia at the moment, adding that the goal was to double its share and thus increase the production of meat, milk and eggs.
He stressed the necessity to enhance the structure of cattle breeds, pointing out it was a very complex process.
The signing of this MoU and the creation of a formal framework to improve cooperation, this process will be quicker because Canada has extremely good quality of livestock genetic material, Petrovic added.
Vashchuk pointed out that Canada recognized the potential of Serbia as a manufacturer of high quality food for neighbouring countries and Europe and wanted to help improve the country's production capacity in cattle breeding, dairy farming, pig farming, as well as in other areas of animal husbandry.
