MK Group is interested in acquiring a stake in Greece's Hellenic Sugar Industry, people at MK Group confirmed for Tanjug news agency.

- Greece's ATEbank announced earlier that MK Group was the most serious candidate on the list of potential buyers - people at that company reminded, but business interests prevented them from giving any other comment on the subject.

The majority owner of Hellenic Sugar Industry is Greece's ATEbank, which holds a 82.33% stake in that national sugar manufacturer.

MK Group reiterated that "the sale of Hellenic Sugar Industry is part of the measures aimed at consolidating the banking system and economy of Greece."

It is stressed that MK Group, at demand, allowed Greece's ATEbank and the Athens Stock Exchange to publish on their websites the information that Sunoko (owned by MK Group) has entered the second round of an international tender for the acquisition of a majority stake (82.33%) in Hellenic Sugar Industry, which owns two sugar plants in Serbia - in Crvenka and Zabalj, and another five sugar plants in Greece.

MK Group is owned by Serbian sugar tycoon Miodrag Kostic. It was announced this week that the group had also taken over the Apatin Shipyard for RSD 150 million. Kostic already owns sugar plants in Bac, Kovacica, and Pecinci.
