The minister of information and telecommunications of Serbia, Mihailo Jovanovic, has stated that, in the next two years, the 5G signal will cover the biggest cities in Serbia, the locations where tourists gather and highways, and the projection is that the whole country will be covered by 2029, the Vecernje Novosti daily reports. He believes that the auction, which is organized by the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (RATEL) will be organized by the end of the year, following which the installation of the stations and the covering with the 5G signal will begin.

Jovanovic said that the precondition for that process to take place was to adopt the Law on Telecommunications, which had already been done, and that what remained for the new Government of Serbia to do was to adopt the prepared Regulation on the Auction for the 5G Network, concerning the conditions for that auction.

– The regulation will say how many permits are to be allocated, what the coverage of the territory is and what price the mobile operators have to pay – said the minister, as reported by the Vecernje Novosti daily.

Jovanovic said that what made the job easier was that the existing base stations would be upgraded and added that certain operators also bought 5G-ready stations.
