The Importance of Presiding Over the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence
Stefan Badza, an adviser at the Cabinet of the Prime Minister of Serbia, says that Serbia was the first country in the region to become a member of the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence.
– We then became a member by consensus and the very membership in the organization proved that Serbia had already done a lot in that field and that it was developing artificial intelligence in a good and responsible way. We have now gotten that big opportunity, we have the honor to chair and co-chair the organization. We got that by a landslide vote, which shows that countries like the founders, such as France, Canada, the United States of America, Great Britain, Germany, have supported Serbia in running this organization – points out Badza.
He says that, for that organization, it is important that it works on establishing the regulations and the implementation of artificial intelligence and development in this field.
He adds that Serbia will have the honor to host ministers from all the member states at the end of the year at the summit and to set the agenda regarding the topics to be discussed and the manner in which artificial intelligence will be developed in the near future.
– So that we can show the whole world how we do it and connect our companies and institutions with global institutions. It is also important to point out that, to the member states of this organization, Serbia exports over 95% of services worth nearly EUR 3.5 billion – emphasizes Badza.
Development strategy until 2030 being prepared
Serbia has the strategy of development of artificial intelligence until 2025, and the Work Group for the forming of a new strategy of development until 2030 was formed recently.
– Due to the changes that have happened in the field of artificial intelligence in the past year, with the appearance of Chat GPT3 and similar technologies, we have decided to update this strategy and come up with even more ambitious goals for 2030 and we are now planning to adopt this strategy in the next month and a half – notes Badza.
What is important is that the Work Group was formed back in December and that this will be one of the first strategies which the new government will adopt, adds Badza.
The challenges faced by Serbia in the field of artificial intelligence
Badza believes that Serbia is a very good place for the development of technology, because it has very talented people, good engineers, and plenty has also been done when it comes to the education regulations in order to enable quicker development.
– The challenges are the availability of data and the state of the ICT infrastructure, especially in the public sector. We are now working hard on fixing that in the healthcare sector, in sectors such as energy, where we already have very good databases, because that is what’s most important – having very well-arranged data in order to implement this technology. So, the challenges pertain to the infrastructure – Badza says.
He points out that, for that reason, a new supercomputer is now being bought for EUR 30 million in order to enable the technology to develop as quickly as possible.
– There are challenges in the implementation and in the economy. We are working on educating companies in that field in cooperation with the Center for Digital Transformation of the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia – concludes Badza.
