Auto Museum Forced to Move out of Belgrade Center, Collection to Go to Private Garages – City Has Not Secured Space
– Since the city of Belgrade, which is also the founder of said city cultural institution, has not secured either a temporary or a permanent alternative space for said museum, the cars, other exhibits and the extensive archival material, which comprise the collection of invaluable national, historical and technical significance, will be unavailable to the public until further notice – announced the Serbian Federation for Historical Vehicles.
The announcement says that the exhibits of the Auto Museum in Belgrade, which features the collection of the former minister of culture Bratislav Petkovic, will be scattered throughout Belgrade, in private garages and other spaces, in, as they estimate, “an absolutely unacceptable manner, which will pose a serious threat to its preservation/”
With this act, as they pointed out, the city of Belgrade is losing a valuable part of its history, as well as its tourism and cultural offer.
The announcement also cites an extract from the Official Gazette which says that the Modern Garage was build in the city center in 1929 and that it was determined to be a cultural monument by the Government of Serbia’s decision in 1994.
Bratislav Petrkovic has been a Serbian director, playwright and politician. He is the former minister of culture and information in the Government of the Republic of Serbia during the mandate of Ivica Dacic as the prime minister. He founded and was the director of the Auto Museum and the Modern Garage theater in Belgrade.
