Leskovac Ljutenica Gets Geographic Origin Designation
Whereas product branding is nothing new in EU states, the protection of Serbian products started only recently and, so far, 85 products from Serbia are featured on the list of internationally recognized products.
The most recent one is the Leskovac ljutenica, which is made by pasteurizing tomatoes and chili peppers, and the geographic origin designation guarantees that it is produced in the traditional way exclusively.
The director of the Regional Chamber of Commerce of Leskovac, Goran Jovic, points out that, after two years, another brand of this city has been protected, whereby they are seeking to preserve its authenticity.
– We hope to protect the “Leskovac” designation and make a legacy from other brands too. I am glad that other producers have also realized this and we are now proud carriers of five brands. Three products, of the 85 in Serbia, are internationally protected and there is still work to be done in that field – Jovic said.
