Belgrade will soon get the first industrial biological facility for the treatment of waste waters. A leading European producer of paper and paper packaging, the Irish company Smurfit Kappa, will open a facility at Ada Huja in Belgrade this year, which will filter the water from the Danube used for industrial needs using biological treatment and pour it back into the river cleaner than when it was taken from the river.

The opening of this facility is part of the “Creating the Future Together with the Nature”, by which Smurfit Kappa wants to show its firm adherence to sustainable business operations, social responsibility and preservation of the living environment, the press release says.

This company has been present in Serbia since 2019, when Fabrika Hartije Beograd and Avala Ada became part of Smurfit Kappa Group.

– In order to better manage the process of treating waste waters and have parameters which are better than even what is proscribed by the EU legal regulations, we have decided to launch the most modern technology for the filtering of waste waters, said Milan Markovic, the general manager of Smurfit Kappa Belgrade, while talking to representatives of the Serbian media, noting that the factory had until then only used chemical and mechanical filtering of waste waters.

Markovic explained that the future biological facility for the treatment of waste waters will use the so-called good bacteria, that everything was done in line with the highest world standards and in cooperation with a team of experts from abroad, and that “the main profit from this facility will be collected by the nature and the river Danube.”

– The recycling of old paper entails a very complex production process where, at the end of the process, water burdened by cellulose and chemical components is extracted. That is why we have opted for a somewhat more complex process of filtering waste waters, which includes both aerobic and anaerobic filtering of waste waters. The aerobic process entails the getting of filtered water and biogas that we can use as energy during the production of paper – Markovic explained.

– The filtered water from the aerobic process is additionally filtered, whereby we get sludge, which is then returned to the process of production, and filtered water, which is cleaner than the water from the Danube we took at the beginning of the process of recycling old paper – said the head of the oldest paper factory in Serbia.

Markovic said that the opening of this facility is part of the philosophy of Smurfit Kappa and that he hoped that the innovations and the approach to business that the company brought to Serbia would also incite other business actors and the whole community to have as their priority care for the nature and sustainable development.
