At the “Promotion of Sustainable Investments” forum, the public was introduced to the “Map of Investment Opportunities in Accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. The forum was organized with the aim of inciting companies to operate in a way that, in addition to bringing profit, at the same contributes to the country’s economic growth, environmental protection and the society’s well-being.

Opening the forum, the minister of domestic and foreign trade of Serbia, Tomislav Momirovic, said that complying with the principles of sustainable development in the global conditions was becoming increasingly important for decision-makers.

– The sectors and the fields presented today within the Map are certainly among the priorities in the Government’s operations. In those fields, we expect a greater inflow of private capital, which is crucial to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals and the creation of an economy based on honoring all global resources – human and natural alike – Momirov said.

The ambassador of China to Serbia, Chen Bo, emphasized that sustainable development was necessary for prosperity and advancement of human society and that it was a question for all of humanity.

– China supports and practices the UN 2030 Agenda, adheres to the new development concept which includes innovations, coordination, green development, openness and sharing and is dedicated to promoting modernization in the Chinese style. I hope that the publishing of this map of investment opportunities will help Chinese companies better understand the business environment in Serbia, the plans and the policy of industrial development and create as many possibilities for cooperation as possible – the ambassador of China to Serbia added.

– Using the already proven global methodology of the UNDP, implemented in over 30 countries of the world, together with the Government and the competent institutions, we have determined in which areas in Serbia there are the best opportunities for sustainable investments. We have recognized five sectors which are profitable opportunities for sustainable investments: food and beverages, renewable energy sources and alternative energy, infrastructure, technology and communications and healthcare – stated Yakup Beris, UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Serbia.

The map which was presented at the Forum identifies the fields and models for investments in Serbia which contribute to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and which are also in line with the national development needs and priorities of the Government of Serbia.

The following fields were highlighted as the most attractive ones for sustainable investments: production of fresh fruit and vegetables, organic farming production, production of solar energy and construction of wind farms, development and implementation of smart technologies in agriculture, as well as the development and implementation of sophisticated software products and services, the provision of waste management services, the construction and management of port infrastructure, the construction of energy efficient residential facilities, the construction and management of hospitality facilities, as well as the production and supply of medicines, the development and provision of digital and specialized healthcare services and the use of biotechnology in medicine.

On the Map, potential investors can find information about how much money needs to be invested in individual projects in these fields, what kind of a return on the investment they can expect and in what time period, how this kind of investment is harmonized with the national development priorities, as well as about the concrete SDG, to which their sustainable investment would contribute.
