Strauss Adriatic – “Green” Operations as Imperative of Socially Valuable Company
Electrical energy from 100% renewable sources
The use and development of renewable energy sources has a very important role in the reduction of carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere, and the increase of its share increases the energy sustainability of the systems of both the business entities and the country as a whole. At the same time, it helps improve the security of energy supply and thereby reduces dependence on the import of energy sources and electrical energy. Strauss Adriatic acknowledges this fact by implementing it in the strategy of its socially valuable operations.
The project that Strauss Adriatic highlights as a pioneering project in ecology is the installation of solar power plants on the factory roof with a total capacity of 109 kW. In addition to that, the company has also received a certificate from Elektroprivreda Srbije confirming that the electrical energy it buys from them comes from 100% renewable sources, so all electric energy is “green” partially from EPS, partially from the solar panels.
In addition to that, the company has implemented the project of collecting rainwater, which is used in the summer to irrigate grass areas, thereby reducing the consumption of an increasingly important resource – drinking water.
Coffee chaff and catalytic cells for gases with the “greenhouse” effect
Since 2012, coffee chaff has been used as biomass for the heating of the administrative part and facility of the factory, whereby CO2 emissions have been reduced by as much as 11%. Additionally, lower quantities of fossil fuels are used, the issue of waste storage is solved, and biomass combustion products do not have a harmful effect on the environment.
Since 2003, the factory in Simanovci has also had catalytic cells for the filtering of gases with the greenhouse effect. Complying with the law regulations, the company carries out periodic measuring of the emission of gases with the greenhouse effect twice a year and keeps the emissions under control that way. The company’s project designed to additionally reduce the emission of greenhouse effect gases is especially highlighted. Namely, the pre-heating of coffee entails the use of the heating energy of one of the coffee roasters for the pre-heating of raw coffee, whereby the roasting process is shortened, consequently reducing the use of energy sources.
Employees as initiators of changes
The external activities of a business entity depend to the largest extent on the internal organization, that is, on each individual employee. That is why Strauss Adriatic pays great attention to the employees, who are themselves the initiators of green initiatives. Instead of plastic cups and single-use straws, personalized EcoCareCup products made from sugarcane are used. A special recycling press has been installed for plastic bottles, and rainwater is used for the irrigation of the green areas within the factory, making for considerable water savings.
The company emphasizes that Strauss Adriatic will continue implementing sustainable solutions, because it thereby sets an example for green business operations in each segment.
