Serbia is discussing, with the European Commission, an intercity train between Belgrade and Vienna, said the minister of construction, transport and infrastructure, Goran Vesic, during his presentation within the Forum for Business and Science Cooperation of Serbia and Italy, and added that he had talked about Italy joining the project the previous week in Rome.

–We would do 90 kilometers to the border with Croatia, we are designing that now and by mid-year, we will have the project and, as soon as we get the money, we will open the tender – Vesic said.

He reminded that the fast railroad from Belgrade to Novi Sad had been completed and that, by the end of 2024, Serbia would be connected with Budapest by a fast railroad.

– We recently signed the agreement with the European Union, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Commission on the construction of 228 kilometers of a railroad in the south of Serbia, that is, from Belgrade to Nis. The designing for this railroad is in progress, it should be done by mid-year, and the first tenders should be opened by the end of this year and they are split into three lots – Vesic said.

He said that the value of the project was around EUR 2.7 billion, of which EUR 610 million was provided by the EU, EUR 500 million came from Serbia’s budget and the remaining amount was money from the loan.

According to him, there are also negotiations with the European Commission about building a railroad to Presevo together, an extension of the railroad from Nis of 88 km, so when Serbia does all this, “it would have nearly 500 kilometers of fast railroads,” says the website of the ministry.
