Belgrade Central Main Ring Road Soon to Be Completed? – Waiting for Green Authorization for Bridge Announced 20 Years Ago
The carrier of the project, the Belgrade Land Development Public Agency, has submitted to the competent ministry the request for giving approval to the Environmental Impact Assessment Study of the construction of the bridge near Ada Huja, with access interchanges and a part of Visnjicka Street. The study was prepared by the CIP Institute of Transportation.
Let us remind that, according to the project, the new bridge is planned within the segment of the outer main road tangent (SMT) which is supposed to connect Pancevacki Put Street and highway E-75.
The location of the new bridge is planned 2.6 km downstream from the Pancevo Bridge on the Danube.
The bridge on the left bank of the Danube will begin on the left side of the Belgrade-Pancevo road and end at the Belgrade bank of the Danube by crossing Visnjicka Street.
The bridge structure is planned to be linked with Pancevacki Put Street through ramps, by designing a de-leveled intersection of the cloverleaf type, whereas a partial cloverleaf de-leveled intersection is planned for the link with Visnjicka Street.
Two access bridges are to be built as well, on both the left and right banks of the Danube (the bridge across Ada Huja and the bridge across the distributary).
The total length of the bridge with a total of 6 lanes in both directions and bicycle and pedestrian lanes will be 3,498 m, and the width will be 32.5 m.
The structure of the bridge is designed as a prestressed concrete beam with four big spans across the Danube, which was chosen as the most economically rational solution.
The bridge near Ada Huja was included in the General Urban Plan of Belgrade in 2003.
Since then, the beginning of the construction of this bridge has been announced on several occasions in the past years, as an alternative to the overburdened Pancevo Bridge, and there have also been allegations that the reconstruction of the Pancevo Bridge cannot start before the new bridge on the Danube is built.
According to the most recent announcement, the construction could start in the spring of 2023.
The bridge near Ada Huja will be one of the seven bridges whose construction is planned in Belgrade until 2030.
When the bridge is completed, with the access route from the Lasta interchange on the highway, with the connections with the recently built expansion in Trosarina and Patrijarha Pavla Blvd, Belgrade will get what was called “the internal bypass route” during the mandate of the previous deputy mayor, whereas in fact it is the outer main road tangent (SMT), which, together with the Banat North Tangent, comprises a kind of a central main ring road of the capital city (though not through the whole city).
