Interior design can significantly impact our mood. We have really become aware of that during the pandemic when were forced to spend a lot of time in our homes. Since then, the home became an office too for many, and in many cases it has remained so even after the pandemic was over.

That being said, now home design is being given better attention than before. For instance, in Serbia, hiring an interior designer isn`t the luxury for the well-to-do anymore, rather, it has become necessary for the wider segment of the population. In other words, people want to avoid making even a single mistake when arranging their home, whether we`re talking about functionality or aesthetics, and that is why they seek help from interior designers.

Our interior design studio, MOJA4ZIDA, had clients with a vast variety of requests in different phases of interior design. We usually get clients who want to renovate their apartments or have already started renovations, or clients who just bought a new apartment that needs to be equipped, decorated and that needs lighting installations. Sometimes clients only need interior visualization (with layouts) so they can see how it will all look like when it`s done, but they find the contractors on their own. In other cases, clients hand us over the control of the whole project, staring with the preliminary design, then the main design, carrying out works and finally, equipping and decoration. Also, sometimes clients ask us to help them design only a part of the apartment, e.g. a living room which is usually adjacent to the kitchen and the dining room, considering that`s the most representative part of the apartment.

Clients` requests refer not only designing the ideal space structure and aesthetic issues but the cost of the entire project as well. Clients, of course, have different questions and different budgets intended for interior design. Our profound belief and “leitmotif”in this creative business is that cheaper interiors don`t have to be any less beautiful or good, they are just different.

This is especially relevant to designing interiors of apartments for rent. Often, clients aren`t prepared to invest too much into equipping the apartments they`re going to rent out, so the budget is pretty limited. If we aren`t able to design an elegant apartment, it doesn`t mean we don`t have to create an original and appealing interior. With the right combination of colors, interesting wallpapers, curtains and decorative pillows we can fashion an exciting interior that will leave a strong impression on every potential tenant.

Small spaces provide an extra challenge. Our clients mostly want to utilize the space of their small apartments to the maximum, and even further. Therefore, it is necessary to think up specific, original solutions so that everything the clients wants could fit and every square inch could be used up. We had a case of a very small apartment for rent, 18 m2 in size in the center of Belgrade, that could possibly fit four people. Despite such a small space and too big demands, all principles of ergonomics were applied and the flat looked like a charming retro apartment in the middle of Paris.

At the same time, the clients with much bigger spaces want maximum functionality too. It is no less of a challenge to optimize the space in a 85 m2 apartment in Belgrade Waterfront. Demands vary, but the standard remains the same – fit the client`s wishes into a functional and aesthetic whole.

Aside from home design, we are also very active in designing office and commercial space. Some of particularly interesting projects included designing a bakery or a small fast food restaurant. However, one specific challenge was designing outlets in shopping malls, such as Big Center in Karaburma, Stadion Shopping Center in Vozdovac or Galerija Belgrade in Belgrade Waterfront. Because, when you`re designing an outlet client`s satisfaction is not enough, and you have to think about architects whose job it it is to make sure each outlet fits into the overall surroundings of the shopping mall.

At the same time, when it comes to office design, we have noticed new trends aside from the typical modern office space design. The trend relates to office and commercial space having some attributes of home living, just like a home is starting to look like a working environment in some ways. This was especially evident when were designing a small software development company. They requested
that office rooms have, aside from the standard working space that includes offices with computers and reception area, a full kitchen, bathroom with a shower and a bed so one could sleep over in the place while having all the comforts of home. We believe that this new trend of erasing lines between office space and home space will become more frequent in the future because it reflects big changes in the way people work which in turn impacts interior design.

All in all, a job of an interior designer, although attractive and creative, isn`t easy at all. Aside from knowing ergonomics, how different materials behave in different spaces, being familiar with all furniture items available on the market, having a sense for composition and inherent creativity, you also have to be a solid psychologist. You have to “enter the client`s mind” and understand what the client likes, what styles they prefer or what they find beautiful. Because clients aren`t always aware of their taste regarding interior design. And everyone has it, even when they say they don`t pay much attention to interiors. Our mission is to articulate clients` wishes and to answer to all demands about the functionality of a specific space and to make an ideal unit out of it.

The ultimate goal of our interior design studio MOJA4ZIDA is for people to feel happier in an indoor space. To feel pleasant in a certain environment and for that environment to bring them a sense of satisfaction, that they maybe weren`t aware of. That`s when we know we`ve done a good job.
