Serbia has presented itself within the 171st General Assembly of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), on the occasion of Belgrade’s candidacy for hosting Expo 2027, with the theme “Play for Humanity – Sports and Music for All”.

In a media statement following the session, the deputy prime minister and minister of finance of Serbia, Sinisa Mali, explained that the plan was for the National Stadium and a new fairgrounds complex next to it to be built for that specialized exhibition and added that the financial funds for those projects had been secured, regardless of the fact that it was not known whether Belgrade would host the expo.

He announced that, by the end of that week, the agreement on the beginning of the works on the infrastructure for both facilities would be signed and said that the best world architects worked on those projects.

Mali explained that Expo 2027 was a very important event for Serbia, considering the economic reforms and the successes the country had achieved in the preceding ten years.

He said that, if it won the candidacy, Serbia would become host to more than 150 countries-participants in the event and added that Serbia was competing against Argentina, Spain, USA and Thailand and that, after the completion of the candidacy, what followed was lobbying for the country all the way until the announcement of the results in June 2023.

This is the second presentation of Belgrade’s candidacy, after the successful promotion in June 2022 at the 170th session of BIE.

The Expo 2027 country-host will be chosen by 170 countries through a secret voting in June 2023.
