A lot has changed since March 2020 and the global pandemic outbreak. Covid has affected numerous social aspects, including the work regime. It seems that we have switched to an unconventional form of work, remote work, incredibly easily and quickly, and we are already now meeting a new phrase.

The phrase is “workation” or “work from a tourist destination”.

As a portmanteau of the words “work” and “vacation”, this new concept does not mean that you are working while on a vacation, which you may have had to fight to get, but precisely the opposite – it means that you are getting a new kind of freedom.

Modern technologies have brought numerous advantages and fully changed the concept of work, making it more flexible.

Employees which opt for a “workation” are a kind of advanced digital nomads. Here’s what it’s about: the trend started making its way through timidly even before the coronavirus, and it is defined as a vacation during which there are considerable work activities.

Employees and employers alike love this concept, because it helps them reduce rent-related costs, while at the same time inciting work from any corner of the planet. Whether you are working from home or a tourist place is irrelevant, and advocates of this idea say that it is also beneficial environmentally, since there is no daily commute by car or plane.

“Workation” is different from the trend of digital nomads who travel the planet, do not have to be based in a country and do full working hours on a laptop. In this more current form of work, the employee can have fewer obligations during the day, and the work period is limited to several days or weeks.

This trend won over Google last year, when the workers, regardless of their annual leave, were offered by the company four “workation” weeks. The results were surprisingly good.

The conclusion from the recently held ITB Berlin is that experts from that field are putting a lot of hope into the “workation” market niche.

It has turned out that the people who are allowed to work in this more flexible way are often more creative and productive, although some flaws also need to be highlighted: for example, it’s easy for the border between the private and the professional to “blur”.

Some employers, on the other hand, offer “workation” as a benefit, counting of saving on the expenditures related to maintaining the motivation and keeping the workforce. This concept is also often related to “staycation”, which pertains to vacationing and traveling within the region the employee lives in.
