The special adviser to the minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Petar Stanojevic, has stated that, with the construction of the Balkan Stream, Serbia has gotten the possibility of supply from another direction, but noted that we still have one supplier, the Russian company Gazprom. On TV Vesti, he added that the beginning of the construction of the gas interconnection between Serbia and Bulgaria would enable a new supply route and the inclusion of other suppliers which will be able to offer gas to the Serbian market, the government announced.

– The new gas pipeline will have a capacity of 1.8 billion cubic meters of gas, which at the moment is nearly 80% of the Serbian market. What’s important is that the gas will flow as soon as the new gas pipeline is built – Stanojevic said.

He pointed out that the new gas pipeline would enable the usage of the gas from Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, and in the future, from east Mediterranean, Egypt and Israel too and added that it should be connected with the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis, providing Serbia with an alternative supply route.

– The new gas pipeline will contribute to a greater security of supply, especially if, in the future, there are interruptions in the main gas flows, in which case we will be able to receive gas supplies from another direction. There’s also a price influence of the new gas pipeline, especially considering that the construction of the LNG terminal in Lithuania reduced the price of gas by 37%. Also, the gas pipeline will pass through east Serbia, which is insufficiently developed. The industry in Bela Palanka, Pirot and other places will get a new source of energy supply at considerably lower prices, which will have a positive impact on the development of that part of Serbia – he pointed out.
