The new German coalition government wants to attract 400,000 qualified workers from abroad each year in order to solve the problem of the demographic imbalance and the lack of workers in the key sectors, a problem that might slow down the post-pandemic economic recovery.

– The lack of expert workforce has become so serious that it is dramatically slowing down our economy – said Christian Duer of the Free Democrats (FDP).

In order to make Germany more attractive to foreign workforce, the coalition partners have devised a point system for experts outside the EU, and they have also raised the minimum hourly wage to EUR 12.

The German Economic Institute estimates that the workforce will lower by over 300,000 people this year, because more old people are retiring than the young are entering the labor market.

By 2029, the gap could increase to over 650,000, and, in 2030, the accumulated lack of work-capable people could reach the number of five million.
