The director of the Tourism Organization of Pirot, Bratislav Zlatkov, has stated that the Pirot Pressed Sausage Fair will certainly not be held in late January, due to the current epidemiological situation.
For ten years now, the Tourism Organization of Pirot has been organizing the Pirot Pressed Sausage Fair, and due to the coronavirus epidemic, the most recent fair with a large number of exhibitors and visitors was held in 2020. Zlatkov told Beta that, in 2021, the producers “sold the pressed sausage at a website that was active precisely in order to make the sale quicker and easier, but also to promote this extraordinary delicacy”.
He added that, if the number of Covid cases drops, there’s a possibility of organizing the promotion of the fair in late February.
The Pirot Pressed Sausage Fair was not held at the Sports Hall “Kej” last year either, due to the epidemiological situation and the measure of the ban on gatherings that was in force at the time.
Instead, the organizers of the fair, the Tourism Organization of Pirot and the Association of the Producers of the Pirot Pressed Sausage, launched the website at pirotskapeglana.rs at the time, where 30 producers presented this specialty that Pirot is known for even outside Serbia.
Until 2020, eight Pressed Sausage Fairs were held, and the interest was always great, not just on the part of the participants, but also the visitors from Serbia and abroad.
The pressed sausage is made only in the Pirot area in the winter, from the best quality beef, goat and lamb meat, with plenty of garlic and pepper, but without any additives, preservatives, or added fats and without being cooked in any way.
It is air-dried and pressed by a bottle every day, which gives the sausage its name.
