The construction of BIO4 Campus, the first such campus in the wider region and a recognizable point on the global map of development in the fields of biomedicine, bioinformatics, biotechnology and biodiversity, will start in Belgrade in 2023, according to the website of the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia.

Those familiar with the matter say that the fourth industrial revolution erases the borders between the physical, digital and biological worlds. The 4.0 revolution will not just have an impact on the economy and the financial markets, but will also shape societies and have a direct influence on our lives, Dr Jelena Begovic, the director of the Institute for Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering of Serbia (IMGGI), emphasizes for Preduzetnik.

– We are aware of the unstoppable development, but also the connecting of artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things, nanotechnology, genetic engineering, biotechnology. Three trends are noticeable – digitalization of healthcare, development of biomedicine and generation of an enormous amount of data – Begovic adds.

All under the same roof

Along Vojvode Stepe Street in Belgrade, near the Torlak Institute and the Faculty of Pharmacy, the plan is to build the Bio Campus, which will spread on eight hectares. The plan is for the Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Pharmacy, at least five institutes – IMGGI, Institute for Medical Research, Institute for Multidisciplinary Research, PANDA Center of the Institute for Biological Research “Sinisa Stankovic”, a part of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and an outpost of the Science-Technology Park Belgrade for BIO4 startups, development departments, production capacities and so on, to be located within the campus.

Serbia – nanotechnology hub

The president of the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia, Marko Cadez, and Jelena Begovic talked to Dror Fixler, the director of the Bar-Ilan institute of nanotechnology and advanced materials (BINA) in Israel last month about the possibilities of the realization of joint projects, among which is the cooperation within BIO4 Campus. On that occasion, Cadez pointed out that Serbia was ready to implement the knowledge and experience of Israel in the fields of innovations and nanotechnologies and to become the regional hub for networking with renowned Israeli institutes, universities, startup and innovation centers.
