Seriously damaged dam of slag dump of "Veliki Majdan" mine near Ljubovija, in case of flood, Drina river is facing ecological catastrophe
Lead and Zinc Mine “Veliki Majdan” near Ljubovija, which was attached to “Trepča” in 1996, has been out of work for over 4 years. It is now endangered by flooding since water has already entered 5 corridors once rich with lead and zinc. Very expensive mining equipment was left on the excavation sites of the mine to be ruined. Everything went bed in "Veliki Majdan" mine in June 2001, when big flood damaged the dam of the slag dump where wastewater from mining flotation flows into. Wastewater contains poisonous matters, such as cyanide and arsenic. In case of new flood, draining out of the big quantities of dangerous matters from the slag dump to the Drina river all the way downstream to Hydroelectric Power Station "Zvornik" and the lake of the power station would destroy all flora and fauna.
