The banking sector in Serbia is stable, no bank has gone into bankruptcy and 99% of the depositing parties are protected and covered by their insurance system, the chairman of the Management Board of the Deposit Insurance Agency and the chairman of the Belgrade Banking Academy, Hasan Hanic, stated today.

At the round table titled “The Importance of the Deposit Insurance System for the Stability of the Finance System”, organized for the fourth time by the Deposit Insurance Agency, the Belgrade Banking Academy and the Association of Serbian Banks, he also said that savings in the country also developed and grew, accelerating at maximum rates in the past few years.

He reminded that the linear model of calculating the deposit insurance premium was implemented in Serbia, whereby all banks pay the premium at the same rate, but added that a law had been adopted two years before by which the insurance premium is calculated and paid based on the risks that are present in the operations of individual banks.

– That is a model that is mandatory for all EU states and it is considered to reflect the best international practice. Our law has recognized that and, in this sense, we will harmonize our regulations with the European ones – Hanic pointed out.

He said that the Management Board of the Deposit Insurance Agency, with the authorization of the National Bank of Serbia, had adopted the methodology and that the Management Board was now supposed to adopt the decision on the beginning of its implementation.

– We planned to start the implementation in 2022, which is in line with the memorandum we have signed with the IMF – Hanic said.
