The works on the modernization of the Port of Prahovo are to start in September, and this port, the most important Serbian port on the Danube, is expected to become fully functional in 2024, announced the minister of construction, transport and infrastructure, Tomislav Momirovic.

During his visit to Prahovo, Momirovic pointed out that ports were the future of transport and that the entire complex with modern infrastructure and warehouses and connections with land transport corridors would be completed by 2024.

– When we are done with the modernization, the Port of Prahovo will have tripled its goods handling capacity. This town also has considerable industrial capacities, and at this moment alone, there are over a thousand employees with salaries between 600 and 650 euros – the minister emphasized.

According to him, the government’s plan is to connect the Danube and the Sava with the rail and road corridor 10 by 2023 and to make use of the great support of the European Investment Bank in those plans.

– I primarily mean the expansion of the Port of Prahovo, the reconstruction of the Djerdap 2 navigation lock, but also the dredging of the German fleet from the Second World War, which is blocking the water transport in this part of the Danube, and this demanding project will begin in March or April next year – the minister said.

The EIB Head of the Regional Representation for the Western Balkans, Alessandro Bragonzi, pointed out that the European Investment Bank was one of the main foreign investors in large infrastructure projects in Serbia, with over EUR 6.2 billion as support to projects.

– Serbia is making great efforts to modernize the transport infrastructure. These projects are expected to increase the trade with the neighboring countries which are EU members and to boost Serbia’s sustainable economic development – Bragonzi said, as announced by the Government of Serbia.
