At the moment, whether a museum or an underground garage is to the built at the Students’ Square depends of the archaeological research. The location currently features a trolley turn, and it may contain ruins of the ancient city of Singidunum, a civilian settlement from the 3rd or the 4th century AD, Beoinfo reports. The archaeologists expect to find valuable monuments in the area bordered by the Students’ Park, faculties and the Ethnographic Museum at a depth of several meters.

The archaeologists are ready, but in order for the research to begin, the trolley turn needs to be moved first, and the city plans to move it 70 meters toward the Republic Square.

According to the head urban planner of Belgrade, Marko Stojcic, this is expected to take place in the next month and a half. He said that the plan was for this location to feature an outdoor museum.

– It will be a landscaped opening, fenced off and adapted to the visitors. There will probably be a ramp installed for descending to the level of 2.3 meters. The visitors will be able take a walk around that part and see everything that’s discovered here – Stojcic announced.

Stefan Pop Lazic, s research associate at the Archaeological Institute, said that all the scientific analyses carried out up to that point indicated that the location features very well preserved pieces of Singidunum’s architecture.
