Ljubomir Radovic, an opposition member from the Lokalni Front Valjevo party within the City Assembly of Valjevo, has sent an MP’s question in a written form to the local parliament pertaining to the announced projects of the Canadian corporation Euro Lithium Inc, that is, Euro Lithium Balkan d.o.o, headquartered in Divci.

In it, Radovic cites the document in English titled “Technical Report, Assessment of Mineral Resources and Preliminary Assessment of Cost Effectiveness of Lithium and Borate Site near Valjevo, Kolubara District, Serbia”, which indicates that this is a project of exploitation of lithium and borate in close proximity to the city on the Kolubara river, in a wider area of the village of Divci.

The report says, as Radovic notes, that the frequently mentioned Rio Tinto company carried out its exploratory boring works in the Valjevo area back in 1997, that they continued in 2003 and that they were then abandoned by the company.

From 2011, companies LithiumLi and Euro Lithium continued the explorations. What they found indicated that the exploitation of said minerals would be cost effective, so Euro Lithium decided to open a surface cut near Divci, MP Radovic says.

He adds that the planned preparatory works reveal the scope of this operation – for the purpose of establishing a mine, railways, roads, railway-road crossings and 110-kV and 220-kV power installations would need to be moved, and the Kolubara river’s flow would need to be diverted in certain places. Also, residential and other buildings would need to be torn down.

In the written question sent to the city, he mentions the potential impact of this surface cut on the environment.
