The World Tourism Organization announced recently that international tourism had gone back to the level it was at 30 years before, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The latest data show that destinations worldwide recorded 900 million tourists fewer in the period between January and October 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.

The biggest drop in international arrivals was recorded in the Asian-Pacific region (82%), the Middle East (73%), Africa and Europe (69%) and North and South America (68%).

The data also show a short-term recovery during the summer months, with Europe recording a lower drop of 71% and 67% in July and August and 72% and 76% in September and October. The drop recorded in international tourism has led to a loss of USD 935 billion, which is ten times more than the loss in 2009, which was the result of the global financial crisis.

The prediction is that international tourism will only stabilize in 2024.
