The Ministry of Mining and Energy has adopted a new Regulation on technical and other requirements for oil-based liquefied fuels, which envisages a lowering of the sulfur content in fuel oils to 1% at the most from January 1, 2021, instead of the current 3%, the Government of Serbia announced.

– By adopting this regulation, for which there was an obligation to be adopted two years ago, Serbia has fully harmonized with the internationally accepted obligations of the implementation of Directive 2016/802/EC about the content of sulfur in certain liquefied fuels – the government says.

They add that the reduction of the sulfur content will lead to lower emissions of sulfur-dioxide wherever fuel oil is used, for example, the power production and distribution sector, heating plants and industry, which is especially important in the heating season, when there’s an increase in the use of this fuel.

In addition to the lowering of the sulfur content in fuel oils, the new regulation also envisages the lowering of the sulfur content in fuels for operating machines and tractors, whereby the full harmonization with Directive 98/70/EC on the quality of diesel fuel and engine petrol is made.

– With this harmonization and the implemented monitoring of the quality of oil products in the Serbian market, use of oil-based fuel of the highest quality is enabled, which contributes to the reduction of air pollution not just in the transport sector, but also in the industry, construction and agriculture – they say.
