Microsoft to end support for many operating systems in July
Microsoft will end support for its Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows 2000 Professional and Windows Server 2000 on 13 July 2010.
The announcement was officially made by Microsoft Hong Kong that said
its support for Microsoft Windows Vista Release to Manufacturing
(RTM) will no longer be provided after 13 April 2010.
This will shake many PC users as, according to research firm Forrester,
even after almost a decade of its release, XP still
powers 80 per cent of all Windows-based enterprise PCs.
From mid-April onwards, Microsoft will not offer support options to the customers that are running an unsupported version of Windows or service pack. The company will first review updates and then build them only for the supported versions and service packs.
Updates will include security updates released with bulletins from the Microsoft Security Response Center, according to the company. Users have the option of choosing the most current service packs, which are easily deployed via Windows Update, Windows Server Update Services/ Microsoft System Center, and the Microsoft Download Center.
Microsoft also said customers no longer have any supported migration path from Windows 2000 to Windows 7 and they will now have to upgrade to Windows XP and then migrate to Windows 7 using Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT) 4.0.
Customers can visit Windows 2000 End-of-Support Solution Center to gain more information on Windows 2000 and Windows 2000 Server. Your PCs and servers can stay supported and receive security updates if you update Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2000 PCs and Windows Server 2000 before the end of mainstream support dates.
Microsoft suggests users visit the website to find out which Windows 7 edition best fits individual customer needs. Those searching ways to migrate to Windows Server 2008 R2 can also find out more details on the website.
