Experts from the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering have prepared the study “Technical-Technological Analysis of the Bus Subsystem of the Belgrade Public Transport”, and the data show that 150-200 vehicles need to be procured urgently so as to stabilize and consolidate the rolling stock of the PUE GSP Beograd and that, in a three-year period, at least 300-400 new vehicles need to be procured, said the secretary for public transport, Jovica Vasiljevic.

– In the past period, the city has procured 244 new single buses for GSP Beograd, whereby the rolling stock was upgraded, but a large number of articulated buses still need to be replaced. The average age of an articulated bus is over 8 years, and the rolling stock of GSP Beograd still has 128 buses of over 12 years, of which 37 are older than 15 years. The realization of the planned bus subsystem schedule of GSP Beograd has been at 90% due to the technical state of the rolling stock. Maintenance costs have increased and passenger safety is directly dependent on the state of the rolling stock – said Vasiljevic, as reported by Beoinfo.

The study has shown that 150 vehicles from the existing rolling stock were rated 1 and are to be put out of use, and 277 were rated 2.

– What we need are vehicles to cover the changes in the schedule due to the planned works in the city, which lowers the quality of the transportation service on the existing lines. We lack vehicles to secure an additional level of safety for passengers in the Covid-19 conditions, whereby there would be fewer vehicles in a bus – Vasiljevic added.

The public transport in Belgrade entails 500 lines, with over 1,600 vehicles which operate daily, traveling a total of 436,000 in 24 hours, with 2.5 million passengers. There are 133 city bus lines and 320 suburban and local ones, 20 minibus lines, seven tram lines, six trolley lines, five mini express lines, 24 night lines, which makes for a total of over 500 lines.

Bus transport makes up 83% of the total passenger transport, which points to the importance of this form of transport and the need to upgrade it.
