The Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic visited yesterday the construction site for the new control tower on the Nikola Tesla Airport with the director of the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA), Predrag Jovanovic. There, she stated that the government’s investments in air traffic demand new and modern control tower and added that the value of the SMATSA investment amounted to EUR 120 million.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that the new control would be 75 meters tall compared to the existing, 60-year-old one with 40 meters in height.

Predrag Jovanovic reminded that they are also building an annex to the existing building, the relevant ministry stated.

– This is the biggest and most important project in the modernization of Serbia’s air traffic control. We are building a 75-meter tall control tower with a 100 square meter control tower cab featuring the most advanced software and technology. The works started on February 24, and the deadline for completion is 550 days, that is, September next year. The works also took place during the state of emergency, in compliance with all protection measures, he said

Development of other airports.

Mihajlovic recalled that aside from Nikola Tesla Airport which has ample development and investment opportunities through concession worth EUR 700 million, they are also developing Kraljevo airport with the aim to turn it into the largest airports for cargo traffic in the region.

– We have managed to boost the operations of the Nis Airport, which registered 440,000 passengers last year. In addition to control tower in Belgrade, by the end of 2021 we will begin the construction of a control tower in Nis, Mihajlovic said.
