Spar Not Currently Planning to Invest in Serbian Retail Market
While the Russian Torgservis Group is preparing to enter the Serbian market with the MERE brand and open at least 100 discount stores, on the other hand, Spar has no plans to enter Serbia, as the company once again confirmed. Christian Sperger, the head of the project development department at ASPIAG, said for Retail Serbia that Spar was not planning to invest in the Serbian retail market at that moment.
Unofficially, ASPIAG (Austria Spar International AG), headquartered in the Widnau area in Switzerland, as the owner of the Spar license for Serbia, had tested the market, but the management gave up due to the high retail space rent price. Spar has tried to enter Serbia several times. The first time was in 2007, when the construction of hypermarkets in Belgrade and Vojvodina was planned, after which the acquisition of certain store chains was considered, but the plans were abandoned following detailed analyses.
Spar Austria Group is a member of Spar International from the Netherlands and the owner of the Spar license for northern Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary. After taking the leading position in its market, Spar Austria started expanding outside its borders by opening stores in northern areas of Italy in 1990. The company SES Spar European Shopping Centers, which has over 29 shopping centers in Europe, operates within ASPIAG.
Another member of ASPIAG is Hervis, which has over 220 sporting goods stores. The seat of Hervis also recently stated that there were no plans to bring the brand to Serbia.
