The Secretary General of the Association of Serbian Insurers, Dusko Jovanovic, told Tanjug that 2-3% of Serbian households have flood insurance and 10% of households in total have any property insurance.

He said that in Serbia every third or fourth insurance policy has an additional clause for flood insurance. He added that it was up to insurance companies to reach every insured person and explain that the insurance policy is an investment and not an added expense and that it wasn't expensive anyway.

– A building, whether a house or an apartment, with the surface area of 50 m2 can be insured with a policy including a flood-risk insurance option for EUR 30-40 per year.

He also said that the problem lies in the fact that the government reaches citizens with offers for damage coverage before insurers have the chance to.

– The state should not be covering the damage costs. It should help the victims but not through covering the damages because that is a job for insurance agencies, he said.

The insurance agents think that the stats regarding agricultural insurance are discouraging but that the overall situation is still a bit better since the state aid helped the number of insured households increase.
