The members of the City Assembly of Sremska Mitrovica have recently considered the project of the construction of the complex of RTC Port of Leget, with a port area in that town. This port is part of the project of the Ministry of Transport and the Port Governance Agency. The total area of the future port is close to 14 hectares.

In line with the Strategy of Development of Water Transport of the Republic of Serbia from 2015 to 2025, which plans an expansion of the port in Sremska Mitrovica, the Port Governance Agency has initiated the preparation of the technical documentation for the realization of this infrastructural project, the agency told eKapija.

– The preparation of the feasibility study with a preliminary project is in progress, whereas the local self-government simultaneously prepared the Detailed Regulation Plan for the area, which was recently adopted. The preliminary design envisages a port of a pool type. In addition to the existing multipurpose terminal, which will still be used for the reloading of general cargo, the port will be expanded by three new terminals, for: grains, liquid cargo (oil and oil products) and bulk cargo (rock aggregates). When it comes to the reloading capacities, the reloading of at least 1,500,000 tons of cargo a year is planned at the port of Sremska Mitrovica – the agency says.

The preliminary project will also define all the necessary infrastructure, including road and rail traffic routes, an operating coast area, but also other accompanying facilities, such as the management building, a parking space for cargo and passenger vehicles, ramps and other features.

When it comes to the importance of this project, the agency points out that the construction of a modern port, connected with the most important European traffic corridors, both road and rail, will contribute to the regional and the national economic development of this part of Serbia.

– Sremska Mitrovica is in close proximity to Corridor X, on the left coast of the Sava, which is connected with the European TEN-T Corridor “Rhine-Danube”. The port will enable Sremska Mitrovica to fully realize all its economic potentials with the strengthening of the industry and the agriculture behind it. This way, business entities will be able to use the services of inland waterway transport as the least expensive form of transport of mass goods – they say.

International passenger terminal

The construction of an international passenger terminal in Sremska Mitrovica is planned in an attractive location in direct proximity to the city center and highlights and is covered by a special project.

– After the local self-government confirms the location of the future international passenger terminal, the agency will prepare the required documentation for the defining of a port area, and then initiate the construction of a suitable floating structure for the boarding and disembarking of passengers – the agency says.

In addition to investments in the existing ports, there's a potential for the development of the “dry ports” concept, as it is close to all the large Adriatic and Black Sea ports. The Port of Thessaloniki got interested in the construction of land container terminals, the so-called “dry ports”, last year.
