Alibaba Builds Digital Factory for Production of Pears

(Illustration) The internet giant Alibaba, which also controls the retail company Hema Xiansheng and Hema Fresh food stores, has recently completed the construction of a factory for the production of pears, called Hema Village, on the Chongming Island near Shanghai.

This is a digital agricultural base, where Cuiguan pears are produced. The fruit will be exclusively available at Hema stores and network.

The Cuiguan variety has an extremely thin skin, the fruits are juicier and sweeter, and they are usually available in July or August.

Alibaba will use drones to monitor the ripening of the fruit, the irrigation is automated, and there are also digital heat sensors.

The director of the digital farm, Li Feng, expects the pears to bring an income of 225,000 yuans (EUR 28,850) per hectare.
